Horrorschocker

I have recently inked an illustration for issue #15 of the German horror comic book series "Horrorschocker", which is available now. It's a pretty good issue, so if you like scary comics, order it here. I'm probably going to do some more work for them in the future. Meanwhile, I'm also working on an 8-page story for the sci-fi comic book Perry - Unser Mann im All.

New life drawings:

new self portrait

For the International Self Portrait Day of conceptart.org (which is today) I made this quick digital self portrait after a photo reference:

I've almost not done any painting at all for the last year or so and therefore thought I should give it another try. I painted this after a great photo reference by photographer Tom Stone. I kinda lost patience when I got to the hat and sweater, but spent a lot of time on the facial details. Here's the result:

The new semester has started and there is now a weekly life drawing course for all design students, which I find mighty cool. These are some of the results from yesterday's session:

lifelines

In my illustration course last semester I drew a few of these somewhat abstract black and white drawings which are really relaxing to do. They came about in a rather subconscious way and so I'd prefer not to explain them. I would like everyone to see in them whatever they want. :)


The first one is quite big (70x100 cm) and drawn with drawing ink and a big brush, the other three are smaller (A3) and done with a Copic brushpen.

Oh nein! Ich bin ein Kerl!

I've just participated in another comic jam project at the Comicforum.de. The comic is about a little girl, Sally, who wakes up one day to discover she turned into a fat ugly dude with a beard. Each artist draws and writes one page of the hilarious gender-switch story. On my page, she meets her best friend who - of course - doesn't recignise her. I drew this one in a pretty short amount of time so it doesn't look exactly spectacular. I hope it's funny though. See the other pages here.


By the way, the other Comicforum jam project Tom's Journey (see two posts below) continues to thrive and has been updated with new backgrounds and an English translation of the text:

I drew this one mainly to try a more classical inking style because I hardly ever do any hatching and use too few blacks. I know there are some anatomical kinks in it and the composition isn't exactly exiting, but maybe it still works?

Wenn Tom eine Reise tut ...

For the last few weeks I've been very busy with university stuff and therefore didn't find any time to post new stuff on the blog. But now the semester is over and I can finally concentrate on some new stuff. I'll post some of the recent university works in the next few days.

Today, I did an image for a very cool jam project from the Comicforum.de. It's basically a giant continuous image with background segments by various artists, on which the thread-starter, Boris Zatko, later adds the main character, Tom.

Last week, I went to the alps with a course from university and spent the time creating Land Art. We lived in a hut without electricity or warm water and had to climb up the mountain for three hours to get there but it was a great experience. This is the object I created out of natural materials and without any tools whatsoever:

the new JAZAM! website

The new website for JAZAM! Vol. 2 just went online.

JAZAM! is a German comics anthology book on which I did the layout, one of the comics, and much of the editorial work. For the second issue, 40 awesome artists contributed over 160 pages of comics and illustrations. I daresay it is much better than the last issue and definitely worth checking out. On the website, you can read a 10-page pdf preview and pre-order the book. There's also a little bonus for early purchasers.

For contributors, the first two issues ordered will be reduced (10€ instead of 12).

We're gonna present, sign and sell the new JAZAM! at the Munich Comicfestival starting June 7. I hope some of you will stop by and say hello.

the final Spacken

The jury didn't really like my last entry, but I'm not giving up and trying again in the final round. This is my final entry for Der Goldene Spacken 2007:

After getting to the second/third (tie) place last week, I have once more participated in the Saturday Night Spack contest. Maybe I'll manage to fully convince the jury with this entry:

Saturday Night Spack

Der Goldene Spacken is an art contest that is held each year to promote the publication of a new issue of the German comix anthology Panik Elektro. This year, the topic of the book (no. 5) is "Disco", so the contest is all about drawing dancing weirdos.
This is my first entry:
