Comic Duel 2008 - rounds three and four

My other two entries for the "Comic Duel 2008". Sadly, none of these made much of an impression on the jury. I only got trough the third round because the entry of my opponent wasn't that strong either.

Entry three. The topic was "Stroke of Genius".

This one probably really isn't that good. Translation of the text: "Oh, if only this were a stroke of genius instead of a stroke of lightning," Mr. W thought and passed away.

The topic of the last round was "For a Fistful of Dollars":

Translation: "Darling? Do you love me only because of my personality or also because I'm filthy rich?" - "Personality." - "OK."
I kinda liked that one. The last round was held live on the Comic-Salon Erlangen and the jury didn't really take a lot of time to even read the texts of the finalists, so they were quite quick to kick this one out. Read the report on the finale here.

The Comic-Salon was lots of fun and there's going to be an exhaustive report on it on the JAZAM! blog sometime in the next few days.

JAZAM! vol. 3 - preorder now!

Almost a year has passed since the second volume of the indie comics anthology book JAZAM! came out, and we're currently printing volume three, which will be finished in time for the Comic-Salon Erlangen in two weeks.

The topic this time is "TIME", and I drew (and wrote!) an 8-page story about time bombs. One of the pages can be seen here.

Comic Duel 2008 - rounds one and two

In the tradition of the "Spacken" contests, there's a new comics competition going on, the "Comic Duel 2008." I have participated and already moved on to the third round. These are my first two entries:

Entry one. The topic was "The Evil Eye".

The jury actually kinda liked this one (which is unusual, because they normally don't ever admit to like anything). The other entries from round one.

Round two. Topic: "Sword of Damocles"

The words in the bubble translate to "Do you want to go out with me?" This one wasn't so popular with the jury, but I still managed to make it to the next round. See the other entries from round two.

JAZAM! vol. 3 - work in progress

I am currently working on an 8-page story for the third volume of the comics anthology book JAZAM!, of which I'm also an editor. The deadline is only one week away and I still have lots of pages to draw and ink. This time, I wrote the story all by myself and I'm drawing in a style that's more stylized than anything I've done before. I hope it turns out alright. Today, I photographed some of the pages and scribbles:

Some new life drawing sketches from a few weeks ago. These are more linear than usual because I used mainly felt tip pens and a brush pen.

Das Thema für JAZAM! Vol. 3 steht fest: "ZEIT". Die dritte Ausgabe unserer Comicanthologie soll kurz vor dem Comicsalon Erlangen im Mai 2008, wo wir auch einen Stand haben werden, erscheinen. Bitte lest euch die folgenden Informationen aufmerksam durch, wenn ihr einen Beitrag beisteuern möchtet!

JAZAM! Vol. 3 soll wieder möglichst kostengünstig aber in guter Qualität gedruckt werden. Der Band ist keine kommerzielle Produktion und wird zum Selbstkostenpreis vorwiegend über die eigene Homepage verkauft. Wahrscheinlich können wir wieder einen Rabatt für die Mitwirkenden anbieten.

Das Thema "Zeit" kann und soll frei interpretiert werden. Hier sind z.B. Geschichten über Zeitreisen, Zeitsprünge, Zeitempfinden, Zeitmangel, Zeitgeist, Zeitepochen oder das Altern denkbar. Comics über das Nahen der JAZAM!-Deadline sind allerdings nicht erwünscht, außer sie sind außerordentlich innovativ. Ein Genre oder Stil ist nicht vorgegeben, es muss nur einen deutlichen Bezug zum Überbegriff haben. Dass die Geschichte einfach nur in der Zukunft oder der Vergangenheit spielt oder dass in ihr auf normale Weise Zeit vergeht, reicht also nicht, der Begriff „Zeit“ sollte schon explizit thematisiert werden.
Da wir auch ein Forum für den Comic-Nachwuchs bieten wollen, werden wir wieder keine unerreichbare Qualitätsmesslatte anlegen, aber allein aufgrund der mit hohen Seitenzahlen verbundenen Mehrkosten muss ein bisschen Auslese sein.

Wenn Ihr tatsächlich einen Comic machen wollt, gebt uns bitte möglichst bald per E-Mail oder im Comicforum Bescheid und nennt am besten auch die ungefähre Seitenzahl, damit wir für den Druck besser kalkulieren können. Für die Anmeldung gibt es keine Deadline, frühzeitige Meldungen sind uns aber am liebsten. Die Comicgeschichten sollten 1-8 Seiten lang sein, einseitige Galeriebilder sind auch möglich. Bis zu 10 Seiten können in Ausnahmefällen eingereicht werden, allerdings nur, wenn die Qualität uns wirklich voll und ganz überzeugt. In diesem Fall bitte vorher Arbeitsproben zeigen! Wer nur zeichnen aber nicht schreiben mag (oder andersrum), kann uns auch Bescheid geben, dann vermitteln wir etwas.

Format: Zielformat 170x260 mm + 3mm Beschnitt (insgesamt also 176x266 mm, wobei die äußersten 3 mm auf allen Seiten nach dem Druck abgeschnitten werden, um weiße Streifen/Blitzer zu vermeiden)
Achtung! Das Format (US-Standard) entspricht nicht genau den Proportionen von DIN A3 oder A4!

Farbe: außer dem Cover komplett in Graustufen.

Lettering: Die Schrift bleibt euch natürlich selbst überlassen, allerdings wollen wir bitte nicht das grauenhafte "Comic Sans MS" sehen! Auch Standardschriften wie Arial oder Times New Roman funktionieren in Sprechblasen oft nicht so toll. Schaut dann lieber mal bei Blambot vorbei!

Künstlerporträts: Am Ende des Buches gibt es wieder eine Zeichner- und Autorengalerie. Wer schon bei den letzten Malen dabei war, kann es einfach dabei belassen und muss uns nur schreiben, wenn etwas (z.B. Alter!) geändert werden soll. Bei Neulingen brauchen wir ein 25x30 mm großes Selbstporträt oder Foto (als TIFF in Graustufen und min. 300 dpi) und einige Infos: Name, Alter/Jahrgang, Wohnort, Homepage (wer keine hat, kann auch seine E-Mail-Adresse angeben), ein Satz über euch (max. 55 Zeichen) und Veröffentlichungen (wahlweise auch Projekte).
Kürzungen vorbehalten.

Wichtig: Deadline für die fertigen Comics ist voraussichtlich Anfang April 2008 (ein genauerer Termin folgt in den nächsten paar Tagen)
Es würde sicher nicht schaden, wenn ihr uns vorher ein paar Zwischenschritte zeigt, was auch verhindert, dass jemand einen fertigen Comic macht, der es dann möglicherweise aus Qualitätsgründen nicht ins Buch schafft.
Wenn die Comics ganz fertig sind, schickt sie bitte zuerst als JPEGs in Web-Auflösung per Mail an uns, damit wir zum Beispiel Schreibfehler im Voraus ausmerzen können. Danach wollen wir die Seiten als TIFF-Dateien (Graustufen, min. 300 dpi).

Horrorschocker

I have recently inked an illustration for issue #15 of the German horror comic book series "Horrorschocker", which is available now. It's a pretty good issue, so if you like scary comics, order it here. I'm probably going to do some more work for them in the future. Meanwhile, I'm also working on an 8-page story for the sci-fi comic book Perry - Unser Mann im All.
