Comicfestival München and JAZAM! vol. 6

Tomorrow, the Comicfestival München 2011 is going to start. It's going to go on for four days and I'll be there the whole time, signing various comics at the booths of JAZAM! (34), Comicaze (41), Weildarum (32), and Volk Verlag (13). (map of the festival) Most of the time, you'll probably find me at the JAZAM! booth. Some pencil drawings for my "Wiesn G'schichtn"-story are part of an exhibition at the Bier- und Oktoberfest-Museum.

My biggest new publication for the festival is definitely JAZAM! vol. 6, which I edited and layouted. It also contains three full-page illustrations by me and a 10-page collab comic with David Koslowski. I wrote the story, he drew the pencils, I inked, shaded, and lettered it. Here's the first page:

Other available books of mine will be JAZAM! vols. 2-5, "Wiesn-G'schichtn" (Volk Verlag), "Vorletzte Geräusche" (Weildarum), and "Comicaze kostenlos 27" (Comicaze). I'm also going to be handing out these free Hipsters stickers:

Over at the JAZAM! blog, we just revealed the cover of the 6th volume of our neat independent comics anthology. I didn't do the cover (except for the logo), but I'm still proud of how it turned out and glad to present it here. The illustration is by Boris Zatko, an amazing Swiss cartoonist.

For the new volume, I did the layout and a ton of editorial work, and also several illustrations and a 10-page comic collaboration with my buddy David Koslowski. I'm gonna show excerpts of that soon, too.

Wiesn-G'schichtn

I've already shown the pencil and ink versions of this panel from a new comic of mine. Now here is the colored version:

It's from a four-page comic for the anthology Wiesn-G'schichtn, which just came out. It's a nice large-format hardcover album with short comics by 18 different Munich-based cartoonists that all revolve around the Oktoberfest and its 200th anniversary this year. My story is about the terrorist attack on the Oktoberfest in 1980 and is scripted by Oskar Rauch. The whole project was initiated by Comicaze and published by Volk Verlag. It's now available in stores and at Amazon.de for € 16,90. You can also order a signed copy from me directly via e-mail.

UPDATE: The first review just went online at Splashcomics.de and it's positively glowing!

bachelor thesis & exhibition

I'm all done with my bachelor thesis now. Two days ago I received several copies of this good-looking hardcover book:

It's the first part of a longer graphic novel I've been working on for about a year now with my co-author Roman Senkl. This first part is 23 pages long, but the whole graphic novel is probably going to be at least five times that.

The title is "Die Anstalt" ("The Asylum") and it's a faux-documentary mystery thriller set inside a strange insane asylum.

If you thought I couldn't possibly publish any more comics at this year's Comic-Salon Erlangen, you'd be wrong. I drew another short comic for a special issue of David Füleki's extremely funny manga-influenced comic book "78 Tage auf der Straße des Hasses" (78 Days on the Road of Hatred). It's a crossover of my Hipster characters and the two protagonists of David's book. Here are the first few panels of it:

Ferne Welten #1

Another comic book coming out in Erlangen is the first issue of the new science fiction magazine "Ferne Welten". It's an interesting project, publishing prose short stories as well as comics. The book has 68 pages and will cost 5 €.

It was first supposed to come out more than a year ago but was delayed until now. That's also why the comic I contibuted is already pretty old now. I drew it almost two years ago (originally for another magazine) and already showed the first page on this blog. Here's another page, though:

Besides JAZAM! vol. 5, a couple more books are coming out at the Comicsalon Erlangen 2010 that have some stuff by me in them. I'm gonna introduce them here one by one in the coming days.

The first one's "Vorletzte Geräusche", a cartoon book about the second-to-last noises that can be heard before someone gets killed. I contains cartoons by 50 different artists, including me.

I contributed the 9-page comic "Hipsters vs. Zombies" and did the layout and design, as usual. The cover was painted once again by the talented Daniela Uhlig. Behold:

For about half a year I've been working on my first graphic novel, the first part of which is going to be my bachelor thesis. I haven't completely finished any actual pages, but I drew two "test pages" a few months ago to find a suitable style. A bunch of things have changed since then and the two pages will not actually be part of the comic, but I'd like to show them here anyway.

I'm at work on a lot of different projects right now (predominantly JAZAM! vol. 5 and my BA thesis), but can't really show a lot yet. One thing I can share right now is this pencil panel from a short comic I'm currently working on. It's an interesting project but I'm not gonna tell you yet what it is... :)

new music + radio interview

Even though this blog is mostly meant to showcase my cartooning and my art and design work, I like to occasionally post some updates about my musical pursuits. I'm the lead singer of the alternative rock band Affection Play and we've recently uploaded two of our songs to our MySpace site. They aren't exactly our newest songs, but they're the only ones we recorded in studio quality so far.

In addition to that, we had a radio interview on the small Munich-based station Radio Feierwerk a couple of weeks ago, which is also on MySpace.

The first one is "Rumpel Styler" from 2006, my contribution to the very first volume of JAZAM!, which has been out of print for a while. This one's for free.

These are two of the nine comic pages of the quasi-sequel to "Hipsters vs. Monsters". The new story ist going to be published in JAZAM! vol. 5 (theme: "Night Life") in june. I'm almost finished with the comic, working on the final page right now.
